Bassani2 A huge congrats goes out to DJ Bassani (Sussex, NJ) for putting it all together in this year’s 70cc Mod title chase at the ATVA Nationals. DJ did it on a Cobra 70cc powered ECX Quad prepared by Wiley Mods. Paul at Wiley Mods has been working hard on making the Cobra 70cc engine platform the one to beat, and it appears he was successful! Congratulations to Hunter Budd for winning Cobra’s first-ever national 65cc AMA AX title!

Budd pilots the American-made CX65 to victory at Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium – on the Monster/AMA SX track – during the AMA National Arenacross finals

Hunter Budd_AXFinal2011_1 HILLSDALE, Mich., (May 11, 2011) – Cobra’s CX65 reached another amazing milestone in the American-made bike’s third year of competition when this past weekend it was raced to a first-ever AMA National Arenacross Championship title by #399 Hunter Budd out of Keller, Texas.

The ten-year-old fifth grader, in his seventh year of racing, powered past another rider coming out of the over/under obstacle on the floor of Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium – the same track Ryan Villopoto would win the SX title on later that day – and onto victory, solidifying Cobra CX65’s inaugural national 65cc class Arenacross title.

“We couldn’t be more pleased for Hunter and his family – making history on the Cobra CX65 this past weekend in Las Vegas,” said Sean Hilbert, President of Cobra Motorcycles. “Hunter’s had a stellar amateur motocross career on Cobras and to deliver our first-ever national AMA Arenacross title is just super. We wish Hunter the best of luck as he moves up to the 85 class full time now.”

Next up for the Cobra Nation is the Ponca City (Okla.) Grand Nationals, July 24-30.

Tomahawk, Cobra, and Troy Lee Designs Partner at the Family Capitol Hill Climb

AMA_FamilyCapitolHillClimb Tomahawk MX Park, Cobra Motorcycles, and Troy Lee Designs is working in cooperation with the AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) and MX Sports to rally in Washington DC at the Nation’s Capitol in opposition of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 that has disrupted and could even see the end of sales of motorcycles and motorcycle products built for children 12 years and younger due to the lead content in the bikes.
Tomahawk came to a partnership agreement with Cobra motorcycle’s CEO Sean Hilbert to award one young rider that attends the rally a new 2011 King Cobra 50 motorcycle.  Tomahawk event coordinator Tyler Newcomer commented on their partnership with Cobra, “No one has been hit harder by the Lead Law than Cobra.  For Sean to make this commitment in these economic times goes to show the importance of this event and his commitment to our young riders.”
Troy Lee Designs is helping to promote Tomahawk’s efforts by handing out a Troy Lee Helmet to one participant and a set of gear to another.  Troy Lee Representative Adam Russler stated, “Troy Lee wants to be involved in all aspects of promoting our sport.  This gives us an opportunity to show our commitment to the youth in our sport and this important cause.”
Tomahawk will be open for camping from Wednesday, May 25th through Friday, May 27th with a free practice day Friday for the riders that will attend the rally on Thursday.  Parents that attend will be given an event t-shirt to wear the day of the rally.  All raffles will be held the evening of the Family Capitol Hill Climb at Tomahawk’s weekly Kids’ Ride Night.
Tomahawk owner Chad Gochenour added, “This is an important event for Tomahawk.  With our already established youth riding programs, we wanted to take this opportunity from the AMA and MXSports and show our commitment to the youth in our sport.  Cobra and Troy Lee Designs are two of the top names in our sport.  To be partnered with them is huge for Tomahawk.  Hopefully, we can take this partnership at the Hill Climb and continue to work with them in the future in our youth programs.”

Cobra’s down in Florida for Thanksgiving … and some Mini O motocross racing!

Cobra racers Chase Sexton, Gage Linville, Jackson Turpin , Jack Rogers, and Parker Mashburn lead the title assault at Gatorback MX Park

2010-LL-Turpin-15-and-Rogers-25 HILLSDALE, Mich., (Nov. 22, 2010) – Cobra racers from all over world are converging on Gainesville, Fla.’s Gatorback MX Park this week for the Cobra Motorcycles-sponsored 39th annual Thor Winter National Olympics, presented by Pro Circuit, Nov. 22-27.

For darn near 40 years they’ve been gathering at Gatorback, former host of the ‘orphan national’ – an AMA MX National, once held in the middle of the supercross season, that was clipped from the schedule in 1997. Fortunately for amateur motocross racers the track lived on and, to this day, remains a cornerstone in the amateur national race season.

“The Mini Os mark the end of the competition year, one last all-out effort by Cobra racers to put all the hard work to test against the other great racers in their age groups,” said Sean Hilbert, President of Cobra Motorcycles. “Cobra’s amateur support effort will be out in full force with the factory hauler at the Mini Os and Cobra engineers on hand to help the dads and their sons with whatever they need.chase_sexton_waldo_2010

“The awesome all-new Cobra 2011s will be racing on the track and on display all week at the Mini Os.”

Leading the assault on the 50cc 7-8 Mini O podium this year for Cobra will be the factory-backed duo of Texas’ Parker Mashburn and Georgia’s Jackson Turpin. And joining Mashburn and Turpin – making up the entire 2010 Loretta Lynn’s 7-8 AMA 2 class podium – will be Cobra’s Jack Rogers (Maryland). Another Cobra kid with a shot at a Mini O podium is Estonia’s Meikko Vettik, a six-year-old racing the 7-8 class, along with first-year 7-8 class 50cc racer Gauge Keith (Maryland) and Florida local Daniel McCullon.

In the 65cc classes, Cobra’s little big man leading the charge on the American-made Cobra CX65 will be Illinois’ Chase Sexton. Sexton will be joined in the 10-11 class title run by Canadian Tanner Ward. Leading the younger guys in the 7-9 65cc class is Pennsylvania’s Logan Leitzel and Chase Yentzer, along with the UK’s Dylan Woodcock. And stepping up from the 50cc class to racer their CX65s in the 7-9 class will be Rogers and Turpin.

And the little guys in the 4-6 class – where Cobra’s swept the Mini O podium as long as anyone can remember – Cobra is led by Georgia’s Gage Linville and Michigan’s Jaiden Taylor.

Trick or Treat?

Just saying the word ‘pumpkin’ can get you in trouble around our place…But, we had to make an exception for this beauty we uncovered on Facebook.  Maybe we should offer a set of pumpkin carving Cobra stencils for Halloween next year?

2011 Cobra Fast Facts – King and ECX50 Cylinder Improvements

Fast Fact V1

The cylinder is the heart of any two-stroke engine. Instead of poppet valves, the two stroke uses carefully crafted passageways to direct exhaust out of the engine and fresh intake mixture in. The shape and size of these passageways (or ports) is critical, and so for 2011, Cobra has decided to leave nothing to chance. Instead of relying on the relatively inaccurate process of casting to determine exhaust port timing, we are setting the timing using a very precise machine that we have developed in-house – no other company in the world has anything like it. The result is more power throughout the RPM range and more consistency from bike-to-bike.

In addition, the Cobra R&D crew also created a self-centering head insert that will ensure that the combustion chamber is always aligned with the piston crown. This not only makes assembly easier, it also allowed us to tighten up squish and increase compression ratio for improved bottom-end torque.
